Do You Have Enough Backlinks? Here's How to Tell

While there are hundreds or even thousands of factors that Google and other major search engines use to determine a site's page rank, it's widely accepted that backlinks carry a lot of weight in the search engine algorithms. A website can only climb to the top of the search engine if it has enough quality inbound links. But how many links is enough? Below you'll find a foolproof method for identifying how many links you need to move up in rank - and how many you'll need to claim the top spot on Google.

Step One: Find out how many backlinks your site has.

• Navigate your browser to Yahoo. In the search query box, type "linkdomain:yourdomainnamehere.com." Yahoo will take you to the Site Explorer site. At the top of this page are two boxes. One box reveals the total number of pages on your site, while the other shows how many backlinks there are to the site.

In the bigger box below, you can see the actual URL of each backlink.

Step Two: Find out how many backlinks your competitor has.

• Go to Google. Type in your desired keywords and look at who is in the spot above you, the spot five above you, and the top spot for that keyword.

• Go back to Yahoo. This time enter "linkdomain:" followed by the name of your competitors. Now you can see how many pages they have on their site, as well as the number of inbound links to each page.

Once you know how many inbound links your top competitor has, you'll have a better idea of how many links you'll need to climb to the top of Google.
